P.'s Playlist: The Procession of the #Jackets

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines the word "Jacket" in several ways:

Group 1
a : a garment for the upper body usually having a front opening, collar, lapels, sleeves, and pockets

b : something worn or fastened around the body but not for use as clothing

While these certainly give a knowledge seeker ample means by which to understand the term, I think my favorite definitions are ones not used as often, and I believe they pertain directly to the grouping of music I planned to speak about in this post:

Group 2

(1) : a detachable protective cover for a book (2) : a paper or cardboard envelope for a phonograph record

(But here's the kicker of a connotation. It actually falls underneath the the medical definition):

-a rigid covering that envelops the upper body and provides support, correction, or restraint-
Talk about a 'light-bulb moment!'
When I read this, I immediately thought of how adeptly it describes the work of the three artists in the photo, who, alongside several other talented creators, have  notoriously dubbed themselves the #
Jackets (click the link to see the Twitter trending topic results).  All three clearly use their music to support themselves.  All three utilize their performances as a means of venting and correcting what they feel to be less altruistic times & decisions in their lives.  And, having experienced both friendship & artistic collaboration with all three, I can testify to the fact that these bright & talented individuals are facilitating their creations as a means of restraining negativity, while perpetuating good energy and honest artistry.  With all this written, let's get to the nitty-gritty, shall we?

1.) OLAMIDE FAISON - Lust (A Cappella Preview) |  www.olamidefaison.com
The more I work with Olamide, the more grateful I am to be able to do so, and constantly astounded at his growth and personal commitment to musical excellence. While I've already heard the 1st mixdown of the full version of "Lust," I'm only allowed to repost his YouTube A Cappella snippet. Trust me, though, this is one you're definitely gonna wanna wait on. Did someone say "Music Video on the way?" Shhh. LOL ;-)

2.) BRIDGET KELLY - Special Delivery | theycallmebk.tumblr.com

From Madison Square Garden, to Magazines, to Music Festivals across the country, LaG alumn Bridget Kelly continues to shine brightly amidst a sometimes shrouded set of musical concepts in the mainstream world. The proof is in a record like this: "Special Delivery." If you were wondering where authentic songwriting/production & vocals went, the answer is, "they never left." BK's got it.

3.) RONNIE 'RO' JAMES - Pledge Allegiance | rojamesxix.tumblr.com

I think I've told Ro James that I've been bumping his buzz cut, "Pledge Allegiance," since it dropped earlier this year. Finally, for all you visual addicts out there, here is director Sarah McClogan's starkly beautiful interpretation of an already exceptional record. The shots are solid, the film-noir concept is neat without being needy, and James gives an honest performance that will surely be talked about in the days to come.

It does my heart & spirit such invaluable good to see my peoples going hard for their art. If you believe in this good music, then please do your part as a believer; if you support me, support them. Follow them on Twitter: @YoOlamide @theycallmeBK @RoJamesXIX. Check out the links posted above. Download/purchase their records. Hit them up and let them know you're feeling the tunes. This is how we grow & connect.  I state publicly here that if it was unclear before, I am in full support of the #Jackets movement.

Kudos, y'all :-)
