P.'s Vids: "Marry The Night" - Lady Gaga

In probably one of the most intimate and elaborate videos she's done, Lady Gaga continues on her record-breaking media campaign with the visualization of her new single, "Marry The Night," the first cut off of the "Born This Way" LP. It is her longest music video to date, exacerbating the idiom by breaking the time up into three distinctive vignettes, the third being the video proper. The usual Gagaesque elements are there; existential sexual & religious overtones, choreography that borders on the stylings of both Martha Graham & Michael Jackson, and the unrelenting assortment of fashion (Giuseppe Zanotti, Loubitin, and Calvin Klein are all present here, coupled with Gaga's own selflessly eccentric touches). What makes this video stand out from the rest is the one thing that so many doubters of the Gaga phenomenon say lacks from all her work: a heightened - albeit exponentially outrageous - sense of honesty.

I made sure to review & comment on this video only after I had watched it three times, and only allowed myself to watch the VEVO-sponsored three-part interview with the Lady as a footnote to my own thoughts. But even after listening to her input, I was allowed to let the truth of the video to hit me - hard. The truth being, of course, that this video was this woman's way of finally giving her fans an artistic recap of people & moments that led up to her rise to international superstardom. It is this shameless sort of cracked-lens view into some important pieces of the life of Lady Gaga that kept me watching. The other familiar things about her artistry wouldn't have done a thing for me if there wasn't a storyline, and this time, she chose one that couldn't help but resonate - her own.

For these, and other reasons, I fully co-sign "Marry the Night," both the video and the song. As an artist, one can only hope to allow oneself to be as sickeningly, beautifully veritable in their search for the aesthetic.  I suggest folks take notes.
